Red Robins, Redding, California

We had a water leak in the front yard recently and the red robins were the ones that made us aware that it was there.  They kept gathering at this one spot for a day or two, not one or two birds but several at a time.  I took these picture, before scaring them off. I think I took the photo from indoors.  

These photos were taken before all the rain.  Luckily it has been raining lots this past few days, and hopefully enough to save the birds as there has been a shortage of water.

Birds that love cherries in Shasta County

The birds came and ate all of our cherries within just a couple of days.  

By the time I made it back to Redding  all the cherries, were gone, or half eaten by birds.  

I never see these bright yellow and orange birds until the cherries are ripe and then there are many of them.  I forget the name so if you know, please leave a comment.  Thanks.

Quails in Trinity County on a snowy morning.

Quail in Trinity County, I am pretty sure they live in the blackberry bushes.

There are always lots of quail around.  I am not sure if there is one group, or many groups of them.

Sometimes I will see ten or more at a time.  They are very quick, and will run as soon as I open the door to take photos.

For once I managed to sneak up on these quails and get a few pictures.  

Another very interesting fact about the quails, that I found out a few days ago.  

My dad informed me that the quail are actually not very fat.  They have an air sac between their feathers and their bodies, which puffs out to keep them insulated.  And I thought they were well fed. :-)  I do see though, now a few weeks later, that they are in fact, not that fat, in the yard yesterday, of course, the weather is warmer.

These are some very beautiful quail, they look pretty well fed to me.

Birds and Cherry Trees

We love our cherry trees!  Last year we were able to freeze many batches of cherries.  This year, it is another situation, the birds have eaten all the cherries off the tree in a matter of days.  We put foil in the trees to ward them off, apparently, the birds laugh at that.  

Next year, we were recommended to have bird seed feeders with bells to entice the birds with. The cherries we did get were delicious! 

Funny Bird

These birds are very pretty.  He was sitting in our front yard, and as I followed him to take pictures, he just casually walked away from me.  Slightly annoyed maybe that I kept following him.  What kind of bird is he I wonder?  Where are the bird experts?

Bald Eagle on the Trinity River, Trinity County

A few days ago I went to see how many more trees the beavers had claimed for their dam of the Trinity River.  They are very determined.  While I was down by the river, I think the eagle was hunting and I may have startled him/her.  Here are the pictures, honestly I am not even sure it is an eagle.  This one looks different, and has different colors than the ones I normally see.  What do you think?

A couple months back I was following the eagle along the river. He went behind the mountain, and I thought he was gone. Shortly after, he swooped right over me as I was at the river, I was so surprised that I barely got a picture. His wing span seemed very wide.

Blue Heron on the Trinity River

The other weekend I had the pleasure of viewing the river otters, the bald eagles, and a blue heron on the Trinity river. Unfortunately I did not get any pictures of the otters and bald eagles this time, I did manage get a couple photographs of the Blue Heron for you.





They are very graceful, yet very awkward at the same time. This bird did not seem to mind the dog and I we were far enough away, he merely moved to another branch when he noticed us (Lily and I). As he moved his wings I captured some of the blue color, other wise, he blends pretty well with the brush.

Myna Birds in Shasta County

This Myna bird sat still for me long enough to take a quick photograph. There are so many birds all the time in the yard. They love the old and large tree's in the yard. Most likely that is what they are singing about all the time. ;-)

Birds in the Yard

There are lots of birds in Northern California and especially near the rivers. It is hard to get pictures of birds as they are frightened quite easily, but here are a few pics that I managed to get the other day. A couple of woodpecker's and not sure what other kind of cute little bird this is. Nor what the next bird, but the last is a Woodpecker.

Blue Heron

This is a blue heron on the Trinity river. They are quite large and yet they still look very graceful.

Turtle Bay Exploratorium

These are a couple photos that I took of the red tail hawk at the Turtle Bay Exploratorium. They have feedings daily where you can watch the birds being fed. This was a rare occasion when the trainers were with the birds. They were out in the main walkway.

Birds Mating

These birds were being very loud on the lawn one morning. Usually birds fly away quickly once I open the door, but these two did not, they were quite intent on one another.















The birds then flew upwards together and then one flew off and they sat in separate trees.
